Conj-w | N-msc  |  16× in 1 sense
A young goat or kid, often specified as 'a kid of the goats'; used in sacrifice, food, and pastoral life
The standard Hebrew term for a young goat, almost always appearing in the fuller phrase gedi izzim ('kid of the goats'). It features in three of the Bible's most memorable scenes: Rebekah disguises Jacob with the skins of kids to deceive Isaac (Gen 27:9, 16), Judah pledges a kid as payment to Tamar (Gen 38:17-23), and the threefold dietary law forbids boiling a kid in its mother's milk (Exod 23:19; 34:26; Deut 14:21). The kid also serves as a sacrificial offering (Judg 6:19; 13:15, 19) and as a gift (1 Sam 16:20). Spanish 'cabrito' and German 'Ziegenböcklein' both evoke the young, tender animal at the heart of pastoral and culinary life.

Senses
1. young goat, kid A young goat or kid (גְּדִי), typically specified as 'a kid of the goats' (gedi izzim). It appears across diverse contexts: as a pastoral and culinary item in the patriarchal narratives (Gen 27:9, 16; 38:17, 20, 23), as the subject of the thrice-repeated dietary prohibition against boiling a kid in its mother's milk (Exod 23:19; 34:26; Deut 14:21), and as an offering brought before the Lord (Judg 6:19; 13:15, 19; 1 Sam 16:20). Samson's visit to his wife with a kid (Judg 15:1) and the comparison to a lion-slaying feat (Judg 14:6) complete the picture of an everyday animal laden with narrative significance. 16×
