High, lofty, tall; figuratively haughty or proud in heart
An adjective spanning both physical height and moral arrogance. It describes tall people (Saul in 1 Sam 9:2), towering trees (Ezek 31:3), high mountains, and fortified walls. Yet its most theologically charged uses are figurative: the 'proud of heart' whom the psalmist cannot endure (Ps 101:5), and the one 'haughty in spirit' contrasted with the patient (Eccl 7:8). Proverbs 16:5 declares every proud heart an abomination to the LORD, making this adjective a key term in wisdom literature's critique of hubris.

Senses
1. sense 1 Haughty, proud, arrogant in disposition — the figurative extension of physical height to moral self-exaltation. In Ps 101:5 the psalmist vows not to tolerate one who is 'proud of heart'; Prov 16:5 declares such a person an abomination. Eccl 7:8 contrasts the 'haughty in spirit' with patience. Spanish 'altivo' and English 'haughty/proud' converge on the same metaphorical transfer from altitude to arrogance. In Ezek 31:3 the word bridges literal and figurative: Assyria as a cedar 'lofty in stature' whose very height becomes an emblem of doomed pride.
