Bashan — the fertile highland region east of the Jordan, originally the kingdom of Og, famed for its cattle and oaks.
Bashan designates the broad, fertile plateau east of the Sea of Galilee and the upper Jordan, stretching from the Jabbok gorge northward toward Mount Hermon. In the conquest narratives it is defined as the kingdom of Og (Num 21:33; Deut 3:1-13), a territory allotted to the half-tribe of Manasseh. The name quickly became proverbial for abundance: the 'cows of Bashan' in Amos 4:1, the mighty 'bulls of Bashan' in Psalm 22:12, and the 'oaks of Bashan' in Isaiah 2:13 and Zechariah 11:2 all trade on its reputation for lush pasture and towering timber. Nahum 1:4 and Isaiah 33:9 personify Bashan as languishing when God's judgment falls. Spanish Basan, French Basan, and German Baschan all transliterate directly.
