flask, jar (from gurgling sound); earthenware container, especially for oil
A flask or jar, named for the gurgling sound it makes when emptied. The term appears in narratives involving symbolic acts or gift-giving. Jeroboam's wife brings 'a jar of honey' along with other items to the prophet Ahijah (1 Kings 14:3). Jeremiah is commanded to buy an earthenware flask and smash it publicly as a sign of Jerusalem's coming destruction (Jeremiah 19:1, 10). The onomatopoetic name (baqbuq, imitating liquid sounds) emphasizes the vessel's function. The shattering of the flask becomes a powerful enacted prophecy of irreversible judgment.
Senses
1. sense 1 — An earthenware flask or jar. Ahijah's wife brings 'a jar of honey' as a gift (1 Kings 14:3). Jeremiah takes a potter's 'earthenware flask' and breaks it in the valley of Ben-hinnom to symbolize God's irrevocable judgment on Jerusalem (Jeremiah 19:1, 10). The gurgling sound of the vessel being poured or emptied gave it its name, and its fragility made it apt for prophetic symbolism—once shattered, it cannot be repaired. 3×
