BDB identifies it as a shortened form of Beth-Baal-Meon (literally 'house of Baal-Meon'), also called Baal-Meon elsewhere in Scripture. The site was assigned to Reuben but later came under Moabite control, as evidenced in Jeremiah 48:23 and Ezekiel 25:9. Modern scholarship identifies it with Ma'in in Jordan.
