Baal-meon, a Moabite town meaning 'Baal of the dwelling'; rebuilt by Reuben, later reclaimed by Moab
A town in Transjordan, east of the Dead Sea, whose name means 'Baal of the dwelling/habitation.' Rebuilt by the Reubenites after Israel's conquest of Sihon's territory (Numbers 32:38), it was settled by Reuben's descendants (1 Chronicles 5:8). By Ezekiel's time, it had reverted to Moabite control (Ezekiel 25:9). The town also appears as 'Beth-baal-meon' and as 'Beon' (Numbers 32:3). The Moabite Stone (Mesha Inscription) confirms the site's importance in Moabite history. The name indicates a Baal shrine, reflecting the region's religious syncretism.
