Bela, alternate name for the city of Zoar in the Dead Sea region
Bela served as an earlier designation for the city that became known as Zoar, one of the five cities of the plain in the Abraham narratives. The name appears in the account of the battle of the kings in Genesis 14, identifying one of the city-states that rebelled against Chedorlaomer. Later biblical references consistently use Zoar, suggesting Bela fell out of use or represented a different phase in the city's history.

1. sense 1 — A place name identifying a city in the Jordan plain, equated with Zoar by BDB (Genesis 14:2, 8). The uniform transliteration across languages reflects its function as a geographical designator. The brief dual occurrence in Genesis 14 suggests this may have been the city's original name before it became known as Zoar, the city Lot fled to when Sodom was destroyed. 2×
