El sustantivo femenino בַּלָּהָה (ballahah) expresa un espanto intenso, destrucción súbita o calamidad sobrecogedora. Sus diez apariciones se concentran en la literatura sapiencial y profética, predominantemente en Job, con apariciones adicionales en los Salmos y Ezequiel. En Job 18:11-14, los terrores acosan al malvado por todos lados y lo conducen ante el 'rey de los espantos' (la muerte personificada). Job 24:17 identifica las tinieblas profundas con los terrores.
