The king's palace at Susa had 'the garden of the palace pavilion' where Ahasuerus held his grand banquet (Esther 1:5) and where the critical scene of Esther 7 unfolds—the king storms out to 'the palace garden,' then returns to find Haman fallen on Esther's couch (Esther 7:7-8). The term may be synonymous with or related to 'apadana' (throne hall). The repeated phrase 'garden of the bitan' evokes the opulent Persian court setting central to Esther's narrative.
