Beth-shean, a fortified city in the territory of Manasseh in the Jezreel Valley, west of the Jordan.
A place name meaning 'house of quiet' or 'house of security,' designating a major city at the junction of the Jezreel and Jordan valleys. Beth-shean was assigned to Manasseh but never fully conquered (Josh 17:11, 16; Judg 1:27). It became notorious as the place where the Philistines fastened the bodies of Saul and his sons to the city wall (1 Sam 31:10, 12; 2 Sam 21:12). Solomon later made it an administrative center (1 Kgs 4:12). Cross-linguistic renderings are strikingly uniform, preserving the compound name across all translations.

Senses
1. Beth-shean (place name) Beth-shean (also Beth-shan) — a proper place name for the fortified city at the strategic junction of the Jezreel and Jordan valleys, in the territory of Manasseh. Despite its allotment to Manasseh, the Canaanite population could not be driven out (Josh 17:11, 16; Judg 1:27). It is most memorably the site where the Philistines displayed the corpses of Saul and his sons after the battle of Gilboa (1 Sam 31:10, 12), and later became part of Solomon's administrative district (1 Kgs 4:12). All major translation traditions preserve the compound form: English 'Beth-Shean', Spanish 'Bet-Seán', French and German 'Beth-Shean'.
