Beer-lahai-roi, a well name meaning 'well of the Living One who sees me'; site of Hagar's encounter
A place name commemorating Hagar's encounter with the Angel of the Lord. The name means 'well of the Living One who sees me,' explained in Genesis 16:14 by Hagar's realization that God saw her in her distress. The well lay between Kadesh and Bered in the Negev. Isaac lived near Beer-lahai-roi when Rebekah arrived (Genesis 24:62), and he settled there after Abraham's death (Genesis 25:11). The site marked a place of divine encounter and ongoing significance for the patriarchal family.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A well in the Negev wilderness where Hagar met the Angel of the Lord and named God 'the Living One who sees' (Genesis 16:14). The site became associated with Isaac, who dwelt there when he married Rebekah (Genesis 24:62) and after Abraham's death (Genesis 25:11). The name preserves the theology of divine sight—God sees the afflicted. 3×
