Eshbaal (son of Saul, also called Ish-bosheth)
Eshbaal was Saul's son, better known as Ish-bosheth in Samuel's narratives. The name means 'man of Baal,' later altered to 'man of shame' to avoid pronouncing the Canaanite deity's name. Chronicles preserves the original form, revealing how scribal tradition sometimes censored theophoric elements.
Sentidos
1. sense 1 — Original name of Saul's son in 1 Chronicles 8:33 and 9:39, preserved where Samuel substitutes 'Ish-bosheth' (man of shame). The 'Baal' element in the name reflects pre-deuteronomic usage when 'Baal' could simply mean 'lord' without exclusively pagan connotations. Later tradition found the name theologically problematic, hence the euphemistic replacement. 2×
