N-proper-fs  |  4× in 1 sense
Ararat; the mountainous region in eastern Armenia where Noah's ark came to rest after the Flood.
A geographical name referring to the mountainous territory of Urartu in eastern Armenia, between the Araxes River and Lakes Van and Urmia. Best known as the landing place of Noah's ark (Gen 8:4, 'the mountains of Ararat'), the name also appears in historical narratives: in 2 Kings 19:37 and Isaiah 37:38, the sons of Sennacherib flee to the 'land of Ararat' after assassinating their father. Jeremiah 51:27 summons the 'kingdoms of Ararat' alongside Minni and Ashkenaz against Babylon, reflecting its status as a recognized political entity in the ancient Near East.

Senses
1. sense 1 Ararat—a geographical territory corresponding to ancient Urartu in eastern Armenia, used both as a place of divine deliverance and as a political entity. Genesis 8:4 names 'the mountains of Ararat' as where the ark rested, making it a symbol of God's preservation through judgment. In 2 Kings 19:37 and Isaiah 37:38, it is the refuge of Sennacherib's regicidal sons. Jeremiah 51:27 enlists Ararat as a military power summoned against Babylon. Spanish 'Ararat' and German 'Ararat/Ararats' preserve the name unchanged, while Akkadian Urarṭu confirms the toponym's antiquity.
