Lion (Aramaic) — the great predatory feline, appearing in Daniel's lion-den narrative and apocalyptic visions
The Aramaic noun אַרְיֵה (aryeh) is the cognate of Hebrew אַרְיֵה and denotes the lion, the apex predator of the ancient Near East. All ten occurrences cluster in the book of Daniel. The lion-den narrative (Dan 6:7-24) uses the word repeatedly as Daniel is cast among lions whose mouths God shuts, then as those same lions devour his accusers — a vivid demonstration of divine sovereignty over nature's most fearsome beast. In Daniel 7:4, the first of four apocalyptic beasts rising from the sea is 'like a lion' with eagle's wings, symbolizing the Babylonian empire. Spanish 'león/leones' and French 'lion(s)' render the term directly.

Senses
1. lion(s) The lion as a literal animal in the Aramaic portions of Daniel, appearing exclusively in two contexts: the den of lions into which Daniel is thrown by royal decree and from which God delivers him by sending an angel to shut the lions' mouths (Dan 6:7, 12, 16-17, 19-20, 22, 24, 27), and the apocalyptic vision where the first beast resembles a lion with eagle's wings (Dan 7:4), widely understood as representing Babylon. Spanish 'león,' French 'lion,' and Arabic 'asad' all map to this apex predator of the ancient Levantine world. 10×
