Aphek, a Canaanite place name meaning 'enclosure' or 'fortress,' applied to several cities in Israel.
A place name borne by at least four distinct sites in the land of Israel, all likely fortified positions—the name itself may derive from a root meaning 'to be strong' or 'to enclose.' The most militarily significant Aphek lies near the Jezreel Valley, where Aramean and Israelite forces clashed (1 Kgs 20:26, 30; 2 Kgs 13:17). Another Aphek in the Philistine plain was where the ark of the covenant was captured (1 Sam 4:1; 29:1). Additional sites appear in Asher (Josh 19:30; Judg 1:31) and northeast of Beirut (Josh 13:4). All translations preserve the name phonetically.
Senses
1. Aphek (place name) — The place name Aphek (אֲפֵק / אֲפִיק), designating several fortified cities across Canaan. The most prominent is the site near Jezreel associated with Aramean-Israelite warfare (1 Kgs 20:26, 30; 2 Kgs 13:17), where a wall collapsed killing 27,000 soldiers. A second Aphek in the Philistine plain witnessed two pivotal battles—the capture of the ark (1 Sam 4:1) and the Philistine mustering before Saul's final battle (1 Sam 29:1). Sites in Asher (Josh 19:30; Judg 1:31) and near Lebanon (Josh 13:4) represent unconquered Canaanite strongholds. The variant spelling Afik (Judg 1:31) and the alternate form Afeqah reflect orthographic fluidity across manuscripts. 9×
