N-ms  |  13× in 1 sense
A prisoner or captive; one held in bondage, whether in a literal dungeon or under oppression.
Denotes a person confined in bonds—whether a literal prisoner in a dungeon or a people held captive under oppression. First introduced in the Joseph narrative (Gen 39:20, 22), the word appears almost exclusively in poetry thereafter, where it takes on theological depth. The psalmists invoke God's compassion toward prisoners (Ps 69:34; 79:11; 102:21), pairing them with the needy and the condemned. In Zechariah 9:11 the liberated exiles of Israel are called 'prisoners of hope.' Spanish 'prisioneros' and German 'Gefangenen' mirror this range from physical captivity to spiritual bondage.

Senses
1. prisoner, captive A person held in physical confinement or captivity, used both of literal prisoners (Joseph's fellow inmates in Gen 39:20, 22; Samson grinding in the Philistine prison, Judg 16:21, 25) and poetically of those crushed by oppression. In the Psalms the prisoner becomes an object of divine compassion (Ps 69:34; 79:11; 102:21), often paired with 'sons of death' or 'the needy.' Zechariah 9:11 extends the image to Israel's exiles as captives whom God liberates. 13×
