Eldad, one of the seventy elders who prophesied in the camp
A personal name meaning 'God has loved,' borne by one of the seventy elders appointed to assist Moses. Eldad and Medad famously remained in the camp rather than going to the tent of meeting, yet the Spirit rested on them and they prophesied (Numbers 11:26-27). When Joshua urged Moses to stop them, Moses replied with his magnanimous wish that all the Lord's people were prophets. BDB suggests Eldad may be the same person as Elidad, a Benjamite prince in Numbers 34:21.

1. sense 1 Multilingual transliteration is remarkably consistent: English, Spanish, French, and German all render 'Eldad' with minimal variation, reflecting the name's clarity and memorability. The two occurrences in Numbers 11 describe the same incident—the Spirit's unexpected falling on Eldad and Medad despite their absence from the official gathering, illustrating that God's Spirit moves beyond human arrangements and spatial boundaries.
