Achmetha (Ecbatana in Greek) was the summer capital of the Medo-Persian Empire, located in the mountains of Media. In Ezra 6:2, this is where Darius's officials found the original decree of Cyrus authorizing the rebuilding of Jerusalem's temple. The cooler mountain climate made it an ideal summer residence for Persian kings. The city survives today as Hamadan in Iran. This archival discovery provided legal authorization for the temple work, overcoming opposition from local governors who had questioned the Jews' authority.
