Senses
1. pool, pond — A body of still or collected water, a pool or pond. Used of literal pools that serve as water sources or reservoirs (Exod 7:19; 8:5 — the pools of Egypt during the plagues). Figuratively describes God's transformative power turning desert into water: 'He turns the rock into a pool of water' (Ps 107:35; 114:8), and wilderness into pools (Isa 35:7; 41:18; 42:15). Multilingual glosses consistently reflect 'pool/pond' (arb: بِركَة, hin: तालाब, deu: Pool, fra: etang). 8×

2. marsh, swamp — A marshy or swampy area, distinct from a clear pool. Used in Ezekiel 47:11 describing the marshes and swamps near the Dead Sea that will not be healed by the life-giving river from the temple: 'But the marshes and swamps will not become fresh; they will be left for salt.' The English gloss 'marshes' (arb: الْأَهْوَارُ) distinguishes this usage from the cleaner 'pool' sense, reflecting stagnant wetlands rather than fresh water reservoirs. 1×
