N-fsc  |  4× in 1 sense
A lost thing; something that has gone astray and awaits recovery by its rightful owner.
This noun refers specifically to property that has been lost and may be found by another. It appears in the legal codes of Exodus and Leviticus governing the obligation to return found items, and in Deuteronomy's detailed lost-and-found legislation. The word is built on the root aleph-bet-dalet (to perish, be lost) with a feminine nominal pattern indicating the object itself. Ancient Israelite law took the recovery and return of lost property seriously — finding something did not make it yours, and concealing a found item constituted a kind of theft requiring restitution.

Senses
1. sense 1 A lost item or piece of property that someone has misplaced or that has strayed away. In Exod 22:9, it appears in a list of disputed property cases where one party claims another is holding their lost goods. Lev 6:3-4 addresses the moral obligation when someone finds a lost thing (aveidah) and lies about it — restitution plus a fifth is required. Deut 22:3 broadens the duty to return any lost item belonging to a fellow Israelite. The multilingual glosses — Spanish 'cosa perdida,' French 'lost chose,' German 'lost Sache' — all center on the concrete notion of misplaced property awaiting rightful restoration.
