1. widow — A woman whose husband has died, often in a vulnerable social position requiring care; used of the widow of Zarephath (Luke 4:25-26), Anna the prophetess (Luke 2:37), the widow's offering (Mark 12:42-43 / Luke 21:2-3), the persistent widow in Jesus' parable (Luke 18:3-5), widows in the early church receiving daily distribution (Acts 6:1, 9:39-41), instructions about widows' enrollment and support (1 Tim 5:3-16), and pure religion as visiting widows (Jas 1:27).
