Cherubim (Hebrew plural form transliterated into Greek) are angelic beings consistently associated with God's presence, glory, and throne. They appear in Genesis guarding Eden after the fall, in Exodus as golden figures overshadowing the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant, in Ezekiel's visions as living creatures bearing God's throne-chariot, and in Revelation around God's throne. The author of Hebrews mentions them when describing the Old Testament tabernacle: above the ark were 'the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat.' These figures represented the heavenly reality that the earthly sanctuary symbolized, God's holy presence enthroned among his people.
