plant
1. plant To plant, set in the ground for growth. Used both literally and figuratively across the NT. Literal agricultural sense: planting a vineyard (Matt 21:33, Mark 12:1, Luke 20:9; cf. 1 Cor 9:7 'who plants a vineyard?'), planting a fig tree (Luke 13:6 pephyteumenen 'planted'), planting in the days of Lot (Luke 17:28 'they were planting'). Figurative/ministerial sense: Paul's apostolic work of founding churches (1 Cor 3:6 'I planted, Apollos watered'; 1 Cor 3:7-8 'neither the one planting nor the one watering'). The passive 'be planted' appears in Jesus's command to the mulberry tree (Luke 17:6 phyteutheti 'be planted in the sea'). All inflectional forms (aorist active, present active participle, aorist passive imperative, present indicative, perfect passive participle, imperfect active) represent the same core meaning. Multilingual glosses are uniform: Arabic gharasa, Hebrew nata, Korean shimeotda, Spanish planto/plantando, French planter, Hindi ropna/lagana. 11×
