φραγ-μός G5418
A fence, hedge, or partition wall; any barrier that encloses, separates, or divides.
Refers to a constructed barrier -- whether a hedge around a vineyard, a wall along a road, or a metaphorical partition between peoples. In the parable of the vineyard, both Matthew 21:33 and Mark 12:1 echo Isaiah 5:2, where the owner builds a phragmos to protect the vines. Luke 14:23 places the poor along hedgerows and country lanes. The most theologically charged use appears in Ephesians 2:14, where Christ breaks down the dividing wall (phragmos) of hostility between Jew and Gentile. Spanish cerca and separación capture this dual physical-metaphorical range.
Senses
1. sense 1 — A fence, hedge, or partition wall serving as a physical or metaphorical barrier. In the vineyard parables (Matt 21:33; Mark 12:1) it denotes a protective hedge echoing Isaiah 5:2. In Luke 14:23 it marks the hedgerows along roads where the marginalized gather. Ephesians 2:14 extends the image metaphorically to the dividing wall of hostility between Jew and Gentile, which Christ has abolished. The Spanish glosses cerca (fence) and separación (partition) nicely distinguish the concrete and figurative dimensions. 4×
