Philadelphia, a city in Lydia (western Asia Minor)
Philadelphia was one of the seven churches addressed in Revelation, located about 28 miles southeast of Sardis in the province of Lydia. The city was founded by Attalus II Philadelphus of Pergamum in the second century BC and named for his devotion to his brother. Situated on a major trade route, it became known for its vineyards and temple worship. In Revelation, the church at Philadelphia receives only commendation from Christ, no rebuke—a church with an open door that no one could shut (Revelation 3:8).
