ὕψ-ωμα G5313
height, high position; metaphorically: exaltation, lofty thing
This term denotes physical height or elevation, and metaphorically, exaltation or anything that exalts itself. Paul uses it in Romans' famous declaration that nothing in creation—including height or depth—can separate believers from God's love. In 2 Corinthians, he employs it for every lofty thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, which must be torn down. The word captures both spatial and prideful dimensions of height.

1. sense 1 — From classical usage for elevation or height (including astronomical exaltation), ὕψωμα appears in Rom 8:39's cosmic catalog: neither 'height nor depth' (ὕψωμα οὔτε βάθος) can separate from God's love—likely spatial/cosmological powers. 2 Cor 10:5 uses it metaphorically for 'every lofty thing' (πᾶν ὕψωμα) exalting itself against knowing God—proud arguments or strongholds requiring demolition. The semantic range spans physical elevation to arrogant self-exaltation. 2×
