To lift up, raise high, exalt; physically of being raised on a cross, and metaphorically of being elevated in honor or status.
Hupsoo is a vertical word -- it always moves upward, whether the movement is physical or metaphorical. John uses it with deliberate double meaning for the crucifixion: 'as Moses lifted up the serpent, so must the Son of Man be lifted up' (John 3:14), where the shameful elevation on the cross becomes the moment of divine glorification. The Synoptics prefer the moral axis: 'whoever exalts himself will be humbled' (Matt 23:12; Luke 14:11; 18:14). Acts proclaims that God exalted Jesus to his right hand (Acts 2:33; 5:31). Across all its uses, hupsoo insists that true height belongs to God alone.
3. exalt oneself — To exalt oneself -- the reflexive sense, always with a warning. 'Whoever exalts himself will be humbled' appears in Matt 23:12, Luke 14:11, and 18:14. Spanish 'el que se exalta' makes the reflexive explicit. Only two occurrences carry this self-directed sense, but the reversal pattern -- exalt yourself, be humbled -- is among the most memorable teachings of Jesus. 2×

Senses
1. exalt in status or honor — To exalt in status, honor, or power -- the most frequent NT sense. God exalts the humble and brings down the proud (Luke 1:52); Capernaum is asked whether it will be exalted to heaven (Matt 11:23); God exalted Jesus to his right hand (Acts 2:33; 5:31; Phil 2:9). Spanish 'exaltar' and French 'exalter' both track this metaphorical elevation. Thirteen occurrences use hupsoo for divine or social elevation, making it the word's center of gravity. 13×

2. lift up physically/spatially — To lift up physically or quasi-physically, especially of the Son of Man being raised on the cross. John 3:14 establishes the typology with the bronze serpent; John 8:28 and 12:32-34 develop it, where 'being lifted up from the earth' means both crucifixion and ascension. Spanish shifts to 'levantar' (to raise), and German uses 'erhoehen' for both senses, but the Johannine double meaning -- shame becoming glory -- is unique to this cluster. Five occurrences. 5×
