ὑποτύπ-ωσις G5296
N-AFS  |  2× in 1 sense
a pattern, example, model, outline
This term denotes a sketch, outline, or pattern to be followed. In technical writing it could mean a rough draft as opposed to finished work. Paul uses it twice in the Pastoral Epistles to describe exemplary patterns: once referring to himself as a pattern of Christ's patience for future believers, and once urging Timothy to hold to the pattern of sound words Paul taught him. The word emphasizes a normative model worthy of imitation.

Senses
1. sense 1 From classical usage for sketches or outlines (opposed to finished work, ἐξεργασία), ὑποτύπωσις denotes a pattern or model. 1 Tim 1:16 presents Paul as a 'pattern' (ὑποτύπωσιν) of Christ's perfect patience toward future believers—an exemplary case study. 2 Tim 1:13 urges Timothy to 'hold the pattern of sound words' (ὑποτύπωσιν ἔχε ὑγιαινόντων λόγων) received from Paul—a normative outline or model of orthodox teaching to preserve and follow.
