ὑπέρογκ-ος G5246
excessive, swollen, bombastic, arrogant (of speech or attitude)
This adjective describes what is excessively swollen or oversized, and metaphorically, speech that is pompous, bombastic, or boastful. Both New Testament uses describe the inflated, empty words of false teachers. Peter warns of those who speak great swelling words of vanity to entice the unstable. Jude similarly condemns those speaking arrogant words to gain advantage. The image is of puffed-up, hollow rhetoric designed to impress and deceive.
Senses
1. sense 1 — From classical usage for excessive bulk or immoderate size, and metaphorically for 'ponderous, verbose' style, ὑπέρογκος describes boastful speech. 2 Pet 2:18 warns of false teachers speaking 'great swelling words' (ὑπέρογκα) of emptiness to seduce the unstable. Jude 16 similarly condemns grumblers speaking 'arrogant words' (ὑπέρογκα) while flattering for advantage—hollow, inflated rhetoric masking spiritual bankruptcy. 2×
