Designa a una persona hábil en un oficio o arte, desde la metalurgia hasta la arquitectura. En Hechos 19:24 y 19:38 describe a los plateros de Éfeso cuyo sustento dependía de fabricar santuarios de Artemisa. Hebreos 11:10 eleva el término de manera notable al llamar a Dios τεχνίτης y arquitecto de la ciudad celestial, un uso que revela el alcance teológico de la palabra.
