be of sound mind, be sane; be self-controlled, think soberly
1. be of sound mind, be sane — To be in one's right mind, to have a sound and rational mental state; used descriptively of someone restored to sanity or contrasted with ecstatic behavior. In Mk 5:15 the formerly demon-possessed Gerasene demoniac is found 'being of sound mind' (sophronounta), clothed and sitting -- a dramatic contrast with his previous madness; the parallel in Lk 8:35 uses the identical participle (sophronounta) with the same contrast. In 2 Cor 5:13 Paul says 'if we are of sound mind (sophronoumen), it is for you' -- contrasting with being 'beside ourselves (exestemen) for God.' German 'nuechtern sein' (be sober), Arabic 'aqilan/sahawna' (rational/sober), Korean 'jeongshin-i deun' (come to one's senses), Hindi 'sacheta/sena' (conscious/aware), Spanish 'en su juicio/en sano juicio' (in one's judgment/in sound judgment) all point to the recovery or possession of rational faculties. 3×

2. be self-controlled, think soberly — To exercise self-control, moderation, and sober judgment; used prescriptively as a moral exhortation to disciplined living and humble self-assessment. In Rom 12:3 Paul urges not to think more highly of oneself than one ought, but 'to think soberly' (sophronein) with the measure of faith God has apportioned; in 1 Pet 4:7 the exhortation is 'be sound-minded' (sophronesate) and be watchful in prayer; in Tit 2:6 young men are exhorted 'to be self-controlled' (sophronein). Hebrew 'hitpakkechu/tseni'ut/lihyot metunim' (be sober/modesty/be moderate), Arabic 'ta'aqqalu/an yata'aqqalu' (be prudent), Korean 'geonshin/jigak' (prudence/discretion), Spanish 'sed prudentes/pensar con cordura/ser prudentes' (be prudent/think with sanity/be wise) all indicate disciplined restraint in thought and behavior rather than mere possession of sanity. 3×
