To meet or encounter someone face to face; by extension, of events or circumstances that befall a person.
Sunantao combines sun (together) and antao (come opposite) to picture two parties arriving face to face. In the Gospels, it appears when a crowd meets Jesus as he descends from the mount (Luke 9:37) and when a man carrying a water jar will meet the disciples in Jerusalem (Luke 22:10). Its most theologically rich occurrence is in Heb 7:1, where Melchizedek meets Abraham returning from battle — a meeting freighted with typological significance. But the word can also extend beyond physical encounters: in Acts 20:22, Paul speaks of things that will 'meet' him in Jerusalem, meaning events that will befall him.

2. befall, happen to — Of events, circumstances, or experiences that 'meet' or come upon a person — that is, befall or happen to someone. This is a natural metaphorical extension: what physically encounters you on the road can also encounter you as fate or providence. In Acts 20:22, Paul says he does not know 'the things that will meet me' (ta sunantesonta moi) in Jerusalem — Spanish 'que me sucederan' ('things that will happen to me') makes the shift from physical encounter to experiential event explicit. Only one NT occurrence carries this sense, but it has deep roots in classical Greek usage. 1×
