Adj-NMP  |  1× in 1 sense
Sympathetic, sharing in the feelings and sufferings of others; compassionate
Characterized by fellow-feeling and compassion, able to sympathize with others' experiences. Peter exhorts believers in 1 Peter 3:8 to 'be sympathetic' toward one another, part of a cluster of relational virtues (unity, love, tenderhearted). The Greek concept involves both emotional resonance with others and practical responsiveness to their needs. In classical usage it described the mutual influence of connected things, but in moral contexts it meant genuine empathy. Christian sympathy isn't just emotional sensitivity but active compassion that binds the community together.

Senses
1. sense 1 Empathetic solidarity among believers, feeling with one another in both joy and suffering. Peter's list of virtues in 1 Peter 3:8 creates a portrait of Christian community marked by shared experience and mutual care. Spanish 'compasivos' (compassionate), French retains the Greek, German 'mitleidig' (sympathetic) all point to active fellow-feeling. This sympathy is both affective (sharing emotions) and effective (acting on that shared feeling to help).
