groan, sigh in distress

Senses
1. groan, sigh in distress To groan, sigh deeply, or lament under the weight of suffering, burden, or longing. All NT occurrences share this core semantic of deep emotional or physical expression of distress. Believers groan inwardly awaiting redemption (Rom 8:23), groan in the earthly tent longing for the heavenly dwelling (2 Cor 5:2, 4), Jesus sighed deeply in response to unbelief (Mark 7:34), leaders are not to carry out their duties while groaning (Heb 13:17), and believers are warned not to grumble against one another (Jas 5:9). The Hebrew equivalent is consistently ne'enach (to groan, sigh). The variations across clusters reflect only inflectional differences (present indicative, present participle, aorist indicative, present imperative) and not distinct senses.
