1. to be moved with compassion, to have pity — To feel deep visceral compassion or pity, a gut-level emotional response leading to merciful action — used exclusively of Jesus (and characters in his parables) in the NT. All 12 occurrences represent the same deponent verb meaning across tense/mood inflections: aorist indicative 'was moved with compassion' (Mt 9:36; 14:14; 15:32; 18:27; 20:34; Mk 1:41), aorist passive participle 'having been moved with compassion' (Mt 18:27; Mk 6:34; 8:2; Lk 15:20), and present indicative 'I have compassion' (Mt 15:32; Mk 8:2). Spanish 'tuvo compasión/compadeciéndose/tengo compasión' all share the root 'compasión'; Hindi 'तरस खाया/तरस खाकर/तरस खाता हूं' consistently use 'तरस खाना' (to feel pity); Arabic 'تَحَنَّنَ/مُتَحَنِّنًا/أَتَحَنَّنُ' are all Form V of ح-ن-ن; Korean uniformly uses '불쌍히 여기다'; Swahili uses '-hurumia' throughout. No semantic distinction exists among the clusters. 12×
