Cohorte militar romana; destacamento de soldados, típicamente unos 600 hombres, estacionado como unidad de guarnición.
En su sentido griego original, σπεῖρα significaba cualquier cosa enrollada o retorcida —una cuerda, los anillos de una serpiente, un ovillo de hilo. Pero en el Nuevo Testamento de la era romana, designa exclusivamente una «cohorte», la unidad militar estándar romana de aproximadamente 600 soldados. Aparece en momentos clave: los soldados que se burlan de Jesús tras su juicio son «toda la cohorte» (Mt 27:27; Mc 15:16), el grupo de arresto en Getsemaní incluye una σπεῖρα con oficiales (Jn 18:3, 12), y en Hechos nombra a la Cohorte Italiana de Cornelio (Hch 10:1) y a la Cohorte Augusta que escolta a Pablo (Hch 27:1).

En el NT siempre tiene este sentido técnico militar romano, sin las acepciones clásicas de espirales o cuerdas.
