Σόδομα G4670
Sodom, the destroyed city of the plain, a byword for extreme wickedness and divine judgment
The proper name of the infamous city destroyed by fire and brimstone in Genesis 19, invoked throughout the New Testament as the supreme example of divine judgment upon sin. Jesus warns that the day of judgment will be more bearable for Sodom than for cities that reject his messengers (Matt 10:15; 11:23–24). Paul cites Isaiah's Sodom oracle to illustrate God's mercy in preserving a remnant of Israel (Rom 9:29). Peter and Jude use Sodom's destruction as a warning paradigm for the ungodly (2 Pet 2:6; Jude 7). Revelation symbolically calls Jerusalem 'Sodom' (Rev 11:8). The name became a universal moral benchmark.
Senses
1. Sodom (proper noun) — The proper name of the ancient city of the Jordan plain destroyed by divine fire (Gen 19), functioning in the New Testament as the paradigmatic example of catastrophic judgment upon wickedness. Jesus uses it to shame unresponsive Galilean towns (Matt 10:15; 11:23–24), Paul quotes Isaiah's Sodom prophecy regarding Israel's remnant (Rom 9:29), and Peter and Jude cite its destruction as a warning for the ungodly (2 Pet 2:6; Jude 7). Spanish 'Sodoma' and French 'Sodome' preserve the name with only minor phonetic adaptation. 10×
