σκληρός — duro, áspero, severo; describe algo rígido, inflexible o difícil de aceptar.
El adjetivo σκληρός (del cual el español deriva «esclerosis») abarca un espectro que va desde lo físicamente duro hasta lo metafóricamente áspero o severo. En el Nuevo Testamento se aplica a personas, palabras y fuerzas: un «amo duro» que cosecha donde no sembró (Matt 25:24), una «palabra dura» que escandaliza a los discípulos (John 6:60), los «aguijones» contra los cuales Saulo da coces (Acts 9:5; 26:14), vientos recios que impulsan naves (Jas 3:4) y las «cosas duras» que los pecadores impíos dicen contra Dios (Jude 15). La palabra «duro» en español refleja fielmente esta misma amplitud semántica que transita de lo literal a lo figurado.
