Σινά G4614
Sinai — the mountain where God gave the Law to Moses, symbolically linked to the old covenant
The indeclinable proper noun Sinai names the desert mountain where God descended in fire and thunder to deliver the Torah to Israel. In Stephen's speech before the Sanhedrin, Sinai is the sacred ground where Moses encountered the burning bush (Acts 7:30) and later received the living oracles (Acts 7:38). Paul's allegory in Galatians 4:24-25 is theologically striking: he identifies Mount Sinai with Hagar and the covenant of slavery, contrasting it with the freedom of the heavenly Jerusalem. The name thus carries both historical gravity and powerful typological resonance.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Sinai, the mountain in the wilderness where God revealed the Law to Moses. From Hebrew sinay. In Acts 7:30 it is the site of the burning bush theophany, and in Acts 7:38 the place of the giving of the Law. Paul uses it allegorically in Galatians 4:24-25 as a figure of the old covenant of bondage, contrasting it with the freedom of the new covenant. French 'Sinaï' and German 'Sinai' transliterate directly from the Hebrew. 4×
