Seleucia, the seaport of Antioch in Syria, about 16 miles west, where Paul and Barnabas began their first missionary journey
Named after Seleucus I Nicator who founded it around 300 BC, Seleucia Pieria served as Antioch's harbor on the Mediterranean. When Paul and Barnabas were sent out by the Antiochene church, they descended to this port (Acts 13:4) to sail for Cyprus. The city featured impressive harbor works and connected the interior of Syria to maritime trade routes. Its strategic location made it a natural launching point for missions westward into the Greek-speaking world.

Sentidos
1. sense 1 Acts 13:4 marks the geographic start of Paul's first missionary journey: 'sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia.' The verb 'went down' reflects the topography—Antioch sat inland and elevated while Seleucia was coastal. The city's role is purely transitional in Luke's narrative; the focus quickly shifts to Cyprus. Yet this launching point symbolizes the church's movement from Jewish-Christian base to Gentile world.
