bad, rotten, worthless
1. bad, rotten, worthless Rotten, bad, or worthless, describing something that has decayed or is of poor quality. Originally meaning physically 'rotten' or 'putrid' (of fruit, wood, etc.), in the New Testament it is used exclusively in figurative contexts as the opposite of 'good' (kalos/agathos). Jesus uses it in the tree-and-fruit metaphor: a bad tree produces bad fruit (Matt 7:17-18, Luke 6:43), and making a tree 'bad' yields bad fruit (Matt 12:33). It describes the worthless fish separated out in the dragnet parable (Matt 13:48), and Paul warns against 'rotten' (unwholesome, corrupt) speech in Ephesians 4:29. All four auto-clustered senses represent the same figurative meaning of 'bad/worthless/corrupt' applied to different referents (trees, fruit, fish, speech) with no genuine semantic distinction between clusters.
