1. sound a trumpet, blow — To blow or sound a trumpet, used both literally and figuratively in the New Testament. The dominant usage describes the seven angels sounding their trumpets in the apocalyptic judgments of Revelation (Rev 8:6-13, 9:1, 9:13, 10:7, 11:15), where each trumpet blast inaugurates a specific plague or cosmic event. Jesus uses it in the Sermon on the Mount for the figurative 'sounding a trumpet' when giving alms (Matt 6:2), meaning to publicize one's charity ostentatiously. Paul uses it eschatologically for the last trumpet that will sound at the resurrection of the dead (1 Cor 15:52). All clusters represent the same basic action of trumpet-blowing across different tenses and moods (aorist indicative, future indicative, aorist subjunctive, present infinitive), not genuinely distinct senses. 12×
