Endurecer, hacer insensible; volver espiritualmente ciego o calloso, dicho del corazon y la mente resistentes a Dios.
Verbo derivado de πῶρος (piedra, deposito calcico) que significa petrificar o encallecer, producir una cobertura dura e insensible sobre el corazon o la mente. En el NT, todo uso es metaforico y teologico, describiendo el endurecimiento espiritual. Marcos registra dos veces el corazon endurecido de los discipulos a pesar de presenciar milagros (6:52; 8:17). Juan 12:40 cita Isaias 6:10 para explicar la incredulidad de Israel: Dios "les cego los ojos y les endureci el corazon". Romanos 11:7 y 2 Corintios 3:14 extienden este endurecimiento al ambito corporativo de Israel.

La raiz πῶρος (piedra calcica, callo) confiere al verbo un caracter medico: como el callo que anula la sensacion, el corazon pierde su capacidad de percibir y responder. En Marcos 6:52, los discipulos no comprenden los panes porque su corazon estaba endurecido.
