burning, fiery trial; the process of burning or testing by fire
This noun denotes burning or the process of being tested by fire. Classical usage included literal firing in cooking, cauterization, and metaphorical testing. The New Testament uses it both literally for fire and metaphorically for fiery trials that test believers. Peter and John employ it in contexts of suffering and eschatological judgment.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Describes burning or fiery testing, both literal and metaphorical. First Peter 4:12 addresses persecution: 'do not be surprised at the fiery trial among you, which comes upon you for your testing.' Revelation 18:9 describes Babylon's judgment: 'the kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning.' Revelation 18:18 repeats this image of Babylon's destruction. The Spanish 'fuego/incendio,' French preservation of Greek, and German 'Brennen' all point to fire's consuming power. This word captures both the purifying fire of persecution that tests faith and the destructive fire of divine judgment. 3×
