In classical Greek, pylōn denoted a gate-tower or gatehouse standing apart from the building it guarded. The New Testament preserves both a grand eschatological use and a humbler domestic one. Eleven of its eighteen occurrences cluster in Revelation 21-22, where the twelve gates of the New Jerusalem — three on each side — define the architecture of the heavenly city. The remaining seven describe ordinary earthly gateways: the porch where Peter was recognized (Matt 26:71), the gate where Lazarus lay (Luke 16:20), and the iron gate that opened by itself for Peter (Acts 12:10). Spanish and French translations consistently render both senses with the same word (puertas, porte), while German distinguishes Tore (monumental) from Tor (single gate).
