Senses
1. to summon, call to oneself — To summon or call someone to oneself, consistently used in the middle voice (proskalesamenos) throughout the NT. This is the characteristic verb for Jesus summoning his disciples or crowds (Matt 10:1, 15:10, 15:32, 18:2, 18:32, 20:25; Mark 3:13, 3:23, 6:7, 7:14, 8:1, 8:34, 10:42, 12:43, 15:44), for the apostles summoning the community (Acts 5:40, 6:2), for Paul summoning associates (Acts 23:17, 23:18, 23:23), and for divine calling (Acts 2:39, 13:2, 16:10). Also used as an imperative for calling elders of the church (Jas 5:14). All multilingual glosses confirm a single sense: Arabic da'a, German herbeirufen/ruft herbei, French appeler, Hebrew qara, Korean bureusida, Spanish llamar/convocar. The seven auto-split clusters reflect only morphological variation (aorist middle participle NMS/NMP, present middle/passive 3S, aorist middle 3S, perfect middle/passive 1S/3S, aorist subjunctive middle 3S, aorist middle imperative 3S) with no semantic differentiation. 29×
