to summon, call to oneself

Senses
1. to summon, call to oneself To summon or call someone to oneself, consistently used in the middle voice (proskalesamenos) throughout the NT. This is the characteristic verb for Jesus summoning his disciples or crowds (Matt 10:1, 15:10, 15:32, 18:2, 18:32, 20:25; Mark 3:13, 3:23, 6:7, 7:14, 8:1, 8:34, 10:42, 12:43, 15:44), for the apostles summoning the community (Acts 5:40, 6:2), for Paul summoning associates (Acts 23:17, 23:18, 23:23), and for divine calling (Acts 2:39, 13:2, 16:10). Also used as an imperative for calling elders of the church (Jas 5:14). All multilingual glosses confirm a single sense: Arabic da'a, German herbeirufen/ruft herbei, French appeler, Hebrew qara, Korean bureusida, Spanish llamar/convocar. The seven auto-split clusters reflect only morphological variation (aorist middle participle NMS/NMP, present middle/passive 3S, aorist middle 3S, perfect middle/passive 1S/3S, aorist subjunctive middle 3S, aorist middle imperative 3S) with no semantic differentiation. 29×
