advance, progress forward
1. advance, progress forward To make progress or advance, used metaphorically in the New Testament for moral, spiritual, or temporal advancement. In Paul's letters it describes his former progress in Judaism (Gal 1:14), the advance of ungodliness (2 Tim 2:16, 3:9, 3:13), and in Luke 2:52 Jesus's growth in wisdom. The underlying image is of cutting a path forward, but all NT uses are figurative. Also used of the night being 'far spent' or advanced (Rom 13:12), applying the metaphor of forward movement to the passage of time.
