πόλις G4172
City, town; an inhabited urban settlement, whether named or generic
Polis is the standard Greek word for a city or town, and in the New Testament it anchors the geographic framework of the gospel narrative. Jesus weeps over Jerusalem as a polis (Matt 23:37), is born in the polis of Bethlehem (Luke 2:4), and teaches through the cities of Galilee (Matt 9:35). The word also carries eschatological weight in Hebrews 11:10 and Revelation 21:2, where the heavenly city becomes God's ultimate dwelling with humanity. Translations uniformly use their basic city-word: 'ciudad,' 'ville,' 'Stadt,' 'kota.'
Senses
1. city, town — An inhabited urban center or town, used 165 times for both named cities (Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Ephesus) and generic references to towns and population centers. Polis provides the geographic scaffolding for the Gospels and Acts, from the nativity in Bethlehem (Matt 2:23) to Paul's missionary journeys through the cities of Asia Minor. The term extends to the eschatological 'holy city' of Revelation 21:2, giving it theological as well as geographical resonance. 165×
