boat, small fishing vessel; ship, sea-going vessel
2. ship, sea-going vessel — A larger sea-going ship used for maritime voyages, found predominantly in Acts and Revelation. Distinguished from the Galilean fishing boats by context (Mediterranean voyages) and by multilingual glosses: Hebrew uses oniyyah (sea ship) rather than sirah (boat), French uses navire (ship) rather than bateau (boat), and Spanish uses barco (ship) rather than barca (small boat). Covers all the shipping references in Paul's voyages: the ship from Adramyttium (Acts 27:2), the Alexandrian grain ship (Acts 27:6), the ship in the storm (Acts 27:10-44), and the vessel Paul boarded at various ports (Acts 20:13, 38; 21:2-6). Also used for ships in James 3:4 (ships steered by a small rudder), Revelation 8:9 (ships destroyed), and Revelation 18:17-19 (maritime commerce in the lament over Babylon). The distinction from 'boat' is one of scale and context rather than a fundamentally different semantic category. 22×

1. boat, small fishing vessel — A small watercraft or fishing boat, used primarily in the Synoptic Gospels and John for the boats on the Sea of Galilee. This covers the vessels used by the disciples for fishing (Luke 5:2-11; Mark 1:19-20; Matt 4:21-22), the boat from which Jesus taught the crowds (Matt 13:2), the boats caught in storms on the lake (Matt 8:23-24; 14:22-33; Mark 4:36-37; 6:47-51), and the small boats the disciples used to cross the sea (Matt 14:13; 15:39; Mark 8:10). Hebrew glosses consistently use sirah (small boat) for these Gospel occurrences, Arabic uses safina, Korean uses bae, and Spanish uses barca (boat) rather than barco (ship). The plural ploia refers to multiple small boats as in Mark 4:36 (other boats accompanying) and Luke 5:2, 7, 11 (the fishing boats by the shore). 45×
