Derivado del adjetivo πικρός (amargo), este verbo significa hacer algo amargo o volverse amargado. En Apocalipsis describe aguas convertidas en amargas por la estrella Ajenjo (8:11) y el rollo agridulce que endulza la boca pero amarga el estómago (10:9-10). Pablo lo emplea en sentido figurado en Colosenses 3:19, exhortando a los esposos a no ser ásperos ni amargarse contra sus esposas. El término abarca tanto la amargura física del sabor como la amargura emocional en las relaciones.
